My name is Hajira but like to be called Mini.
I am visually impaired and have learning difficulties. I’ve have Stargardt Disease, which is a rare genetic eye disease. I can’t see clearly into distance, only figures of the outline of people, not their details.
I study Health and Social Level 1 in local college. I really enjoy studying in health and social care, its really interesting to learn about peoples health conditions. I like helping and supporting people with health problems and to help them emotionally.
I was looking for work experience as part of my college course and I decided to work at Berkshire Vision. I wanted to find out about lots of unique eye conditions and how Berkshire Vision support people.
On my course I study:
- Child care
- Health care
- First aid
Child care is like supporting and helping children with learning and new skills, playing games and helping them engage.
Health care is supporting people needs at any age with their physical and mental health needs and people with a disability.
During my work experience at Berkshire Vision I have done the following:
Monday 27th February
I met with Gill, Volunteer Manager, she told me about her work helping people socialising.
I met Clare, Marketing and Communications officer, she makes the website and social media posts.
Justine, the Equipment Officer, showed me magnifiers and special filter glasses and a talking object that you can record on. Chris a Sight Loss Support officer helps people with sight loss, information and how they need supporting.
Elizabeth, the Grants Writer, applies for funding from organisations.
Hannah is the Activities Manager. She organises the adults activities and is responsible for the whole activities team.
Saturday 4th March.
We went to the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, we had a look around and had a guided tour. We went train and it was funded by GWR.
Wednesday 8th March
We visited waterside centre in Newbury, to find out the facilities and activities that they run. We also reviewed the visit to Oxford.
Thursday 9th March
We had a teams call with another charity about the joint event in June and another teams call with Blind in Business.
Friday 10th March
We attended Busy Bees in Wokingham. A pre-school group.
I really enjoyed my work experience at Berkshire Vision. I learnt a lot about people with different visual impairments and how Berkshire Vision helps them.
