Patrons

Our Patrons are incredibly valuable to us. They represent the values and mission of Berkshire Vision and work tirelessly to raise our profile and spread news of the good work we do.

Mr Chris Tarrant, OBE

Patron

“I’m very proud to be involved with Berkshire Vision, they do so much wonderful work for men, women and children with all levels of impaired vision in the Berkshire area. I have my own very personal reasons for supporting this charity. My father who fought as an inventory officer all the way through World War II from 1939 to 1945, and somehow survived virtually unscathed, always said “If I’m killed or injured or even lose a limb, I accept that as part of fighting this bitter war, but please don’t let me ever lose my sight.” And my own dear Mum was registered blind for the last few years of her life. So, it is clearly a charity that is very close to my heart.”

The Rt Hon the Lord Benyon of Englefield

Patron

Richard was born, raised and educated in West Berkshire. He was the MP for the Newbury constituency between 2005 and 2019. As well as being involved with a large number of local organisations, including Berkshire Vision, Mary Hare School and Swings & Smiles, he is well known across the region as a farmer and businessman. He was very involved with environmental issues in Parliament, serving as Minister for the Natural Environment and Fisheries under the Coalition government and continues to champion many environmental causes. The Queen appointed him as a member of her Privy Council in 2017 and he was appointed to the House of Lords in 2020. He is married to Zoe with whom he has two sons. He also has three sons from his previous marriage. He said: ‘I am delighted to support Berkshire Vision. Its first president when it was founded in 1910 was Dame Edith Benyon and my family has been involved with the charity ever since. I know that its practical and professional support is a lifeline to visually impaired people of all ages across Berkshire and I look forward to being part of this vital work in the coming years."

Souleyman Bah

Patron

Souleyman Bah, is a 22 year old Para-athlete who was diagnosed with Retina Pigmentosa at the age of six. He won a gold medal in the 100m at the Paralympic School Games and featured in the 2019 BBC series of The Apprentice – it’s first disabled candidate! He is currently in training for the Paris 2024 Paralympics and works with schools and businesses as motivational speaker. “I am absolutely honoured and delighted to be presented with the opportunity to be a patron for such an incredible organisation as Berkshire Vision. To not only represent, but also contribute in any way I can, to continue the great work they are doing in the areas of sport and employment is a privilege. Berkshire Vision changes the lives of visually impaired individuals, their families and the wider society (which I have seen for myself). Equipping people with the necessary skills, confidence and support to be the best versions of themselves. An organisation like this, which genuinely impacts lives in a positive way deserves all the backing it can get.”
