Chris Owen, known as “Blind Man with a Backpack,” is about to embark on an extraordinary journey along the rugged Pembrokeshire coastline in Wales, aiming to cover an impressive 250km within a single week.
Diagnosed with Cone Dystrophy, a rare hereditary form of macular degeneration, in 2018, Chris’s life took a significant turn when he was officially registered as blind just before Christmas in 2021. In a remarkable display of determination, Chris is set to walk 250km of the picturesque Pembrokeshire coast in only one week. This inspiring endeavour is aimed at raising crucial funds for local sight loss charity Berkshire Vision, an organisation that has provided vital support to Chris throughout the progressive deterioration of his sight
Chris’s sight loss has led to various challenges, including the inability to read books and the reliance on audio description while watching TV. He also requires assistance from railway teams when using trains independently. Despite these challenges, Chris’s commitment to conquering barriers remains steadfast. Chris is a big football fan, and has been able to carry on playing the sport through regular blind football sessions run by Berkshire Vision in partnership with Reading FC Community trust.
Sharing his anticipation for the journey, Chris explained,
“Walking has always been a means of relaxation for me but it is now also my primary mode of transport. Things have become harder as I lose more sight, and I am now reliant on my white cane mobility aids or the support of family and friends. I’ve walked some long distances over the years, but this is my biggest challenge so far as I attempt to walk 250km in a week along the stunning Pembrokeshire coastline.”
To ensure a successful and safe journey, Chris will be accompanied by his long-time friend, Dominic, who will serve as his dedicated guide. The funds raised through this incredible trek will directly benefit Berkshire Vision, thereby ensuring that their essential support continues to positively impact the lives of individuals facing similar challenges.
The Pembrokeshire coast was chosen by Chris due to the fond memories it holds for him and his family. His sensory experience will encompass the sounds of seabirds soaring along the clifftops, the crashing waves below, and the soothing touch of soft white sand between his toes. Beyond covering miles, each step along the coastal path challenges societal perceptions of blindness, proving that anything is possible.

Chris’s journey commences on Saturday September 16th at the Ceredigion border near St Dogmaels in the north and is set to conclude at St Govan’s Chapel near Bosherston in the South on Saturday 23rd September.
