Cataract Awareness Month

June is Cataract Awareness Month

Cataracts are one of the most common causes of sight loss, especially as we age. Being diagnosed with cataracts can feel overwhelming, whether you’re just beginning to notice changes in your vision or are recovering from surgery, you’re not alone.

At Berkshire Vision, we’re here to offer practical and emotional support to help you live confidently with sight loss.

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts are a natural part of ageing for many people, occurring when the clear lens in your eye becomes cloudy over time. This can lead to blurred or dimmed vision, increased glare, and difficulty recognising faces or reading.

Cataracts typically develop slowly and painlessly.

Common symptoms include:

  • Blurry or cloudy vision
  • Increased sensitivity to light or glare
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Fading or yellowing of colours
  • Frequent changes in glasses or contact lens prescriptions

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, we encourage you to schedule an eye examination with your optometrist as soon as possible.

Early Detection is Key

Early diagnosis plays a crucial role in managing cataracts. Regular eye exams can detect changes in vision long before they become debilitating. If left untreated, cataracts can lead to significant visual impairment, but when caught early, lifestyle changes and timely surgery can restore clear vision and improve quality of life.

If you are living with cataracts, Berkshire Vision can help. As a local charity supporting people with sight loss, we provide emotional and practical support, guidance on equipment such as lighting and magnifiers, and access to a wide range of other support designed to help you live independently and confidently.
