Ellie has been supported by Berkshire Vision for a number of years. She has been an active participant in our Children, Young People and Families Programme and is now moving into our 18-35 groups. Ellie has just finished a year at Reading College.
To help her at college the Equipment and Technology team meet with Elle and suggested a magnifier to help her.
Ellie, tells us more about how it has helped her.
“I got my Humanware Explore 5 magnifier in October from Berkshire Vision to help me with certain things like using the till without getting too close at the college shop, and seeing the Best Before date on products at a shopping session with my Habilitation specialist.
I have been mostly using the magnifier in the shop at Reading College to complete certain tasks, such as data-checking and using the till. Before being introduced to the Humanware Explore 5, I had to get very close to the card scanner in order to put in the correct price that is on the main screen of the till. However, having this magnifier has made it one hundred times easier for me – I don’t have to lean over just to dial in the correct numbers, I can just use the magnifier to dial the price in and read it from the screen.
Occasionally, I’ve also been using the magnifier to do some date-checking. I read out the best before date on a certain product, take Twix, for example, then someone else writes down how many Twix bars have the same best before dates on them.
With my Habilitation specialist, I went to Tesco to do a shopping task. I used my magnifier to find the best before date on a pack of beetroot, then we picked out the best option.
My magnifier has worked wonderfully since I got it from Berkshire Vision – it has made things so much easier for me!
